Leadership Begins at Home
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader!
John Quincy Adams
At SJBHS, you are a leader if you have taken a nomination form, filled all the details which are then scrutinized thoroughly for fulfilment of the three pillars of Jesuit Education – Academic excellence, Character Formation and Social Concern. After all this, the student has passed Round 1. The nominees were then presented to the teachers to be assessed, on various criteria, while they try to convince them, through their speeches, on their ability to be leaders. Five candidates were short-listed to represent each of the four houses, St Andrew’s, St David’s, St George’s and St Patrick’s. The final round was a simulation of the actual election process of the largest democracy of the world, India.
The voters were the students of Class 7,8 and 9 while the teachers were designated as Chief Election Officers, Presiding Officers, EVM-in charge, Verifying Officers, Inking Officers and Law Enforcement officers. The four polling ‘booths’, with accurately calibrated EVM’s and voter lists of the registered candidates, was nothing short of the election decorum. At the end of the counting of votes, the Captains and the Vice Captains of the four houses emerged to claim their spot as leaders of their houses; North stars for their house mates; and collaborators for their house mentors!
The formal investiture ceremony held on 23rd January 2026, after two months of process and protocol, was a formal and solemn ceremony.
The Principal, Fr Norwin Pereira SJ, led the Captains and Vice Captains into the SJBHS grounds after the traditional Josephite Guard of Honour. The audience comprised of the voters, the Captains and Vice Captains of the previous year, the teachers and the proud parents of the newly elected leaders. The School Flag was hoisted, the School Anthem was sung, the prayer said with utmost faith and reverence while the prayer song melodiously called on the Almighty to bless the leaders.
The formal announcement of the Captains and Vice Captains for the year 2025-2026 was made. The Principal then took over the formal ceremony as he elicited promises of duty, responsibility, equality and humility from the leaders. The Oath was administered; the leaders were honoured with their house-leader batches; and they were commissioned as the heads of their House, an honour fought for and gained through a fair, free and democratic process.
The Captains and Vice Captains made their speeches, addressed their house mates and left the stage with their new badges shining brightly on their proud chests, their heads held high with the sense of long dreamt fulfilment and their shoulders braised to lift the challenge of a year in the limelight!
